Lost Soul Lament (A rhythmic imitation of the first stanza of My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke) Rose Lefebvre The drug possesses me, why did this path begin? Life is not made easy as it burns my brain within. Faced with such strange feeling each time it possesses me and sends my head reeling but never sets my soul free. Mother sits there crying, father shakes his head and sighs; They fear I am dying, their fretful gaze hits my eyes. My heart feels their sadness, makes me want to turn and cry. Drugs have caused such madness- I scream and do not know why. Such angry words spew out stabbing at their caring hearts, their pain is seen, still I shout words at them like unkind darts. Fleeing from them and home in my high I walk the streets, not knowing why I roam when home means warmth and clean sheets. Despair possesses me knowing the grief I create I listen to each plea for me to quit and go straight. Stopping is not easy, Do I really want to try? Do I want to free me from the ecstasy when high? Rose Lefebvre has been writing poetry for over 37 years, only sharing it in the past 3 years. She won the top poetry prize, Best of Show, at the Oregon State Fair in 2003 and 2nd place in 2004. She has also written articles for a small city newspaper. She is a member of Chrysalis: Women writers and also Writers Club, both at Clackamas Community College.
