Bullfrogs (A rhythmic imitation of if everything happens that can't be done by e.e. cummings) Margaret V Doran the tadpoles are hatchin’ down in the pond where water is stiller than fish can spawn the eyespots grow tails and they twist and twitch from an egg pop a tadpole’s a switch when they hatch ‘neath a tender green frond not one of them wonder or ask why it’s so and not one can grasp what weeds don’t show that out in the water a danger exists they’ll be et’ when they can not resist the fish who make sure they won’t grow for those that are left when the carnage is done they grow new legs in the pond and sun so just when they’re thinking that this change is good with a hop up to soil they are food for parents who eat them for fun the big frogs only know that these are fat and plumper than frogs in trees and easier pickings than bugs ever are when they croak they just can’t be that far and scarf them all up as they please today a few of the bullfrogs remain but journeys through life share joy with pain the frogs that live will be stronger and bold they’re bagpipes with two legs so I’m told and sing a commanding refrain
Margaret Doran lives in rural Oregon in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains.
