Mandi Elliott

to earth's soil he pressed his trembling lips
fingers spread apart against the stone
tracing down the thin, indented scripts
wondering why she left him there alone
the years had blown away like sand on shores
carried by winds as lovers often are
folded hands begged prayers of just one more
time with her to leave a wanted scar
he brought flowers to her on the hill
the kind he knew were in her wedding hair
and through old tweed he felt the evening's chill
her name was whispered soft against his ear
the blade, the silent fear and dread of man
took on death to be with her again.
