“turtle sonnet turtle”

Liz Hart

the world moves by and we just sit there
sharing stories as passing creatures check
out turtle on her rock, and me in my chair
on the grass - front lawn and craning necks

I think: what does she have that's better than me?
a slow moving smile, just like I have - then
because she's considered wise, I must fail to see
shell instead of skin, claws instead of hands

but I just keep thinking of the passing earth
I know it's a noble life, to sit and observe
and I honor her ways, but don't want to be left
missing out on everything, there's so much to learn

so I don't object, I listen to her teachings
even though I realize, turtles can be misleading
