“pantoum of death”

Liz Hart

wITh an apathetic hand i light another one
the smoke from my cigarette cHASing
pAst cut grass, bleach hair, butterflies going right into the sun
MakEs it hArd for me to loathe aNd act uninterestING

the smoke from my cigarette chASing
Something That Used to Prove i existeD
mAkeS IT hard to be bored without laughing
aShEs and butts litEring the eMpty school groundS

A little Something that proves i’m in existence
Such Is the gaMe PLayed with cigarEttes
AShes and butts Yeilding tO “no smoking” institUtions
I MAke couGhIng NoisEs, but have no regrets

What a pathEtic life addicted to cigarettes
Smoke curling pAst sunken eyeLids, Lazy pack-a-days
my lungs burn from HAVing to cough so much, still no rEgrets
My tirEd hANd lIghts aNother one aGain
